Most experts and those not in the medical profession know that a flu pandemic is expected to hit at any time. Experts can’t predict the exact time or how serious it will be but when it happens, you will know it.

The World Health Organization expects 1.9 million deaths, 90 million people sick and nearly 10 million people hospitalized with an additional 1.5 million requiring intensive care. That’s just in the United States! WHO usually gives pretty conservative statistics so you know it could be worse than that.

I suppose that’s why the US Government has put so much effort into reorganizing FEMA and informing hospitals around the United States what to expect. It’s also why the government is trying to stockpile vaccines at critical times during the year.

So who will get first dibs on the vaccines? Influenza usually strikes from December to March. The Federal Government in 2008 published its “Guidance on Allocating and Targeting Pandemic Influenza Vaccine” report. It was put together by an intra-agency process from all sectors of government, including the US Dept of Defense, Homeland Security Dept. (DHS) and the HHS (Dept of Health and Human Services) with input from public, business and community organizations. Click to read the full report

The report’s purpose is to inform people about how they propose to protect the US population.

After reading it, I came to the conclusion that they felt that mission critical government personnel were to be the first recipients of any vaccines, then essential support and sustainment personnel working for the government, then intelligence services personnel working for the government, then border patrol personnel working for the government, then national guard personnel and other domestic national security personnel (policemen and women) and then other active duty and essential military personnel.

Okay, if there is any vaccine left after those people, then they will deliver vaccines to public health personnel at hospitals, then inpatient healthcare providers like nurses, then outpatient and home health providers, then healthcare providers in long term care facilities, next, community support and emergency management people, then pharmacists, then mortuary services personnel and other healthcare personnel. Got it?

If any vaccine is left, they will allocate it to EMS people, law enforcement, and fire fighters, manufacturers of the pandemic vaccines and antivirals, infrastructure personnel like nuclear plant workers, communications workers, electricity, oil and gas workers and water sector personnel.

Next will be financial clearing and settlement personnel, critical operational and regulatory government personnel, then banking and finance, chemical, food/agriculture, pharmaceutical, post office personnel and other critical government personnel.

Sounds good. The government will be safe and operational. If there is still any vaccine left, I assume all those government personnel will fan out to the general population and look first for pregnant women, then infants and toddlers 6-35 months old, baby sitters of infants, then children 3-18 who are very ill, then children 3-18 who are not ill, then those persons 19-64 who are ill. Finally, if there is any vaccine left, those healthy adults who are 65 and older will get theirs and last will be healthy adults from 19-64 years old.

Well, that’s quite a list. It reflects a definite set of priorities (survival of government agencies and functions at all costs, defense against the hordes of invaders from other countries, defense against all the healthy adults 19-64 years old who will rob and plunder the cities and helpless others.

Okay, if you’re now a healthy adult between 19 and 64 years of age, you are last on the list and perhaps most at risk in this scenario. The government knows there will be a shortage of vaccine because not until the exact form of the flu virus is known will vaccine-makers start to create a vaccine that works against it. This takes precious time and a lot of resources. So what can you do if you are last on the list?  Well I know what I am doing;

I am stocking up on the New Silver Solution from Nutronix International to protect me and my family. The Oct. 17 issue of the journal Cell  contains a description of an antibiotic compound called myxopyronin that scientists at Rutgers University say shows great promise in animal tests against drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis and the deadly type of staph known as MRSA.

Human tests haven’t begun yet but early results in animals point to possible success in human studies with the hope being that a product could be developed in 5 years.

I don’t know about you but as far as I am concerned, much of the research money that goes towards developing stronger and stronger antibiotics to defeat creatures with a very strong will to survive (bacteria) is counterproductive.

We do need to understand bacteria and how they function and how they survive and adapt but to tout the antibiotic as a destroyer of the superbug MRSA in its current form seems rather wasteful - especially since MRSA is already easily killed with a patented EPA-certified safe product that has been on the market for purchase for several years now.

Those people and hospitals and medical clinics that currently use the New Silver Solution as a first line of defense against superbugs like MRSA and SARS and many many others, already have a highly effective and low-cost product that they can keep for years in their emergency medical kits or in their medicine cabinets.  Pathogenic bacteria (those bacteria that can harm humans) are helpless against the New Silver Solution because it has a very different kill-mechanism than antibiotics - a kill-mechanism that bacteria cannot evolve defenses against.

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (Ticker)—UNC Asheville center Kenny George had to undergo a partial amputation of his right foot due to a serious infection, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported on Friday.

At 7-7 and 370 pounds, George contracted the infection during Pete Newell’s famous Big Man Camp in Las Vegas over the summer. According to the report, the senior underwent at least two surgeries and other procedures to fight the infection. It is unknown when the amputation took place.

According to ESPN.com, the infection was MRSA, a potentially life-threatening staph infection that is resistant to antibiotics. MRSA is contracted from skin-to-skin contact through cuts or openings in the skin.

Although the 22-year-old’s condition is unknown, Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach hinted in a statement to the Citizen-Times that George’s playing career could be over.

“This is a really terrible setback for Kenny,” Biedenbach said. “He worked so hard to get into the situation where he could play last year and was working hard to be ready for this season.

“To have basketball taken away from him seemingly isn’t fair.”

Gaining national attention two years ago due to size, George emerged as an impact big man last year. Despite playing just under 20 minutes a game, the nation’s tallest player averaged 12.4 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds as the Bulldogs recorded a school-record 23 wins.

George led the nation in field-goal percentage at 69.6 percent and set a school record with 93 blocks.

While he may never play again, Biedenbach told the paper that he does expected George to return to school.

We’re getting close to flu season again. Bird Flu will once again be in the news as scientists track its mutations this winter. The Soap and Detergent Association is out with its 4th Clean Hands Report, and it gives Americans a C-minus.

Echo Research conducted the telephone survey of 916 heads of households, 458 women and 458 men, in August 2008 on the association’s behalf.

Hand Washing Slipping in America

Some key findings:

• 85% of participants say they wash their hands after making a bathroom trip. But in 2006’s survey, that percentage was 92.
• 46% of respondents say they spend 15 seconds or less washing their hands.
• 39% never or seldom wash hands after coughing or sneezing.
• 39% don’t always wash their hands before eating lunch. In 2006, that figure was 31%.
• 56% of participants knew that regular hand washing is seen as the best way to prevent colds and flu.

In a news release, Nancy Bock with the Soap and Detergent Association says it’s time to get on board with hand washing.

“Americans should prepare for the onslaught of cold and flu season,” she says. “Cleaning your hands regularly throughout the day can help keep you out of the doctor’s office or the emergency room.”

This is a wake up call that every American should heed. We are living in an era that has many titles and many dangers lurking within. One of the newer titles to our age will be the Age of Pandemics. Already superbugs are growing more powerful and becoming more pernicious. Scientists and researchers are doing their best to tackle the problem and find a solution but to date have had limited success in pharmaceutical and antibiotic laboratories.
